St John’s Wort Quality
St John’s Wort is comprised of a wide range of phytochemicals of which the naphthodianthrones (consisting mainly of hypericin and pseudohypericin) are characteristic, while several other constituents are found across a very wide variety of plant species; eg chlorogenic acid, flavonoids and biapigenins. Studies have shown that hypericin administered with flavonoid glycosides caused an increase in the bioavailability of the hypericin. St John’s Wort extracts containing the flavonoid glycosides but devoid of hypericin and hyperforin have been shown to be pharmacologically active in model systems. Additionally, extracts devoid of hyperforin have been proven effective in clinical trials. In the graph, all extracts profiled contain 0.3% hypericins (naphthodianthrones) as measured by the industry standard spectrophotometric method. However a wide variation in the other constituents was found when the samples were analyzed by HPLC, with some extracts having very low levels of all other phytochemicals. MediHerb recognizes the importance of the other constituents, particularly the oligomeric procyanidins and flavonoid glycosides and tests all it’s St John’s Wort products using both the spectrophotometric and HPLC methodology.
